BINGHAMTON, N.Y . - “Basically, the world has wanted Marla,” says Binghamton Gallery owner Anthony Brunelli. Marla, is, of course, Marla Olmstead, the abstract painter of brightly colored acrylics on canvas who’s become the newest, most unlikely darling of the art world-at only 4 years old.
Ever since The New York Times reported her story in late September, the global media have beaten a path to Marla’s door, whether it’s CNN and the BBC, David Letterman and the London Times or a Vietnamese Web site and a Turkish radio station. In two shows at Brunelli’s Gallery-at least 10 television news crews chronicled the second show-30 paintings by Marla sold for more than $100,000. California collector Stuart Simpson, who owns paintings by Monet and Renoir as well as a sculpture by Rodin, bought three. Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander bought another. “Waterfalls”, 4 feet square sold for $ 12,000. Marla’s paintings start ad $ 5,000, says Brunelli, who added he hopes to schedule Marla’s next show in a new locale-London. And what is Marla’s reaction to all this hubbub? “Marla doesn’t understand that her paintings are selling. She thinks of it in terms of bubble gum and lip gloss,” her father, Mark Olmstead, says. “She’s kind of reclusive, a little bit shy, but when she’s painting, that’s when she’s at her most confident.” For more information, visit www.marlaolmstead.com. << Go Back to Media Page | | ||
